A car’s past deserves a closer look.
Understand what MOT records, service history and independent checks each tell you.

An advert contains seller statements. MOT records show test results recorded by DVSA. An independent history report may cover matters such as outstanding finance, stolen status or recorded write-offs. Each answers different questions; one does not replace the others.
Read the MOT timeline
Look at dates, recorded distance, failures and advisories across several tests. Ask what repairs followed a failure and whether repeated advisories have been addressed. An MOT pass describes the test at that time; it does not guarantee the car’s condition today.
Follow up on missing records
Ask for service invoices or the relevant digital service record. Check that the records match the car and the described work. Gaps are a reason to ask questions, not an automatic verdict on condition.
Know what has actually been checked
Check the report provider, date, registration and scope. Seller claims should remain clearly labelled. Our MOT tool does not check outstanding finance, stolen status or write-offs. Arrange a separate report before committing.
